Social Security Changes - What You Need To Know

Last November, Congress passed the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015. This budget bill also made some significant changes to the social security law, particularly social security claiming strategies. In this report, social security expert Brian Doherty explains what has changed and what you need to do to because of the changes.

Doherty points out that Congress eliminated the ability to use some excellent claiming strategies, but the changes didn’t take effect immediately. People who qualify can still use these strategies. The two strategies Doherty is referring to are “file and suspend” and “restricted application.” These strategies will still be available for a short period of time.

Doherty says that it is most important to learn about “file and suspend.” On May 1, 2016, that strategy will go away forever unless a claimant is 66 years old or older before that date. People who qualify can still use the strategy but must do so before May 1, 2016. This is important because this strategy “can generate tens of thousands of additional social security income.” People who have this strategy available to them need to learn about it and decide if it is right for them.

As to the “restricted application” strategy, Doherty says that a claimant had to be sixty-two before January 1, 2016 in order to be eligible to use it. Claimants who meet the age requirement are grandfathered in to the strategy and can use it in the future. People who qualify need to learn about this strategy, one which can pay thousands of extra dollars in benefits.

Doherty has incorporated information about the changes into a new edition of his book, retitled “Getting Paid to Act Now!” Anyone who is nearing the time of applying for social security should get the book and read about the strategies. Go to Doherty’s website,, to learn more.
